SEO vs GEO

GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?

SEO earns you a place in a list. GEO earns you a place in an answer. Here's where the two overlap, where they differ and which to focus on first.3 min read

SEO and GEO often get talked about as if they're competitors. They're closer to siblings. Both are about helping the right people find your business. They differ in where that happens and how success is measured.

The short version

SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in search results on engines like Google and Bing. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps your business get mentioned and cited in answers written by AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews.

Put simply, SEO earns you a place in a list. GEO earns you a place in an answer.

Where they overlap

Most of the groundwork is shared. Both depend on:

  • A site that search engines and AI crawlers can reach and read
  • Fast, mobile-friendly pages without technical errors
  • Content that answers real questions clearly
  • Schema markup that labels your business and services
  • Consistent business information across the web
  • Reviews and mentions that show others trust you

That overlap is good news. Work on the foundations usually pays off in both places at once.

Where they differ

The differences show up in how content is found, used and measured:

  • The result: SEO aims for a ranking position. GEO aims for a mention or citation inside a generated answer.
  • The unit of content: search engines rank whole pages. AI assistants often use a single passage, so each section needs to make sense on its own.
  • The competition: a results page shows many links. An AI answer may name only a handful of businesses, so the gap between included and left out is sharper.
  • The signals: links and on-page relevance remain central to SEO. AI assistants also weigh how consistently and credibly your business is described across other sources.
  • The access rules: AI companies run their own crawlers, and some sites block them without realizing it. Checking that is a GEO-specific task.
  • The measurement: SEO has well-established tools for rankings and traffic. GEO tracking means asking AI assistants real questions and recording who gets mentioned, and those answers vary from run to run.

Why rankings alone don't tell the whole story

A business can rank well on Google and still be missing from AI answers to the same question. The reverse can happen too. AI tools draw on different sources and weigh them in their own ways, so strong results in one channel don't guarantee results in the other.

That's why it's worth checking both. If you only track rankings, you can miss the conversations where customers are deciding who to call.

Which should you focus on?

For most businesses the answer is both, in the right order. Start with the shared foundations, because they help in search and AI answers at the same time. Then look at what's specific to each channel:

  • If you don't rank for your core services, start with SEO fundamentals like technical fixes, service pages and local listings.
  • If you rank but don't appear in AI answers, look at crawler access, quotable content, structured data and mentions on other sites.
  • If you're visible in both, focus on tracking and on expanding into related questions, services and areas.

The bottom line

SEO and GEO aren't a choice between old and new. They're two views of the same goal: being the business people find when they need what you offer. Search engines and AI assistants will keep changing how they work, but clear, trustworthy, well-structured information stays useful to both.

An audit that covers both will show you where the gaps are and which to close first.
